Grain Elevators

explosion protection by application

The Challenge

The first challenge is to prevent a deflagration in either the head or boot portion of a grain elevator from spreading quickly through either leg of the elevator to surrounding equipment. The second challenge is to use an environmentally-friendly agent capable of protecting both people and facilities against the devastation of a runaway explosion.

The Solution

Fenwal X-PAC Protection Systems provide a systematic approach to protecting the head and boot areas of grain elevators. Using safe, environmentally-friendly agents especially formulated for explosion isolation, these reliable systems react in milliseconds to stop explosions from propagating from one component to another.

The Benefits

  • • Stops flame propagation in milliseconds
  • • Offer choice of chemical or mechanical
  •    isolation
  • • Minimizes equipment loss and process
  •   downtime
  • • Saves lives and prevents injury
  • • Replaces Halon 1301 with environmentally
  •   friendly agent options
  • • Provides automatic protection 24 hours a day
  • How a Fenwal Explosion Protection System Works:

    1. 1. Self-contained master and slave X-PAC
    2.     Modules are strategically located throughout
    3.     the head or boot areas of a grain elevator
      2. A sensitive pressure detector within each
    4.     X-PAC Module senses pressure increases
    5.     caused by an impending explosion
      3. The detector sends a signal to the X-PAC
    6.     Master Unit, which triggers the high-speed-
    7.     discharge extinguisher in each X-PAC Module
      4. In 3 to 5 milliseconds, a safe, effective
    8.     suppressant agent is delivered to the
    9.     protected area, isolating the explosion and
    10.     preventing its spread to other equipment
